the Dazzling Diversity of Microscopic Life in the Sea |
I have two major lines of research. The first centers on the taxonomy, systematics and evolutionary ecology of marine planktonic diatoms. The second is oceanographic, and looks at the interrelationship between phytoplankton distributions in time and space, and the small-scale physical structure of the water column. Each one of these fields, and my contributions to them stand alone. But it is especially exciting to combine them, for collectively they offer a unique perspective from which to assess the validity of the current paradigms which direct our approach to each field. My goal is to combine my detailed taxonomic data base, the theoretical rigor of formal systematics and evolutionary ecology, and new oceanographic information on biological-physical and biological-optical interactions between diatoms and their environment into an updated theoretical framework for studying the ecology of phytoplankton throughout the world's oceans.
