About This Site...

Italics - Latin names are properly written in italics. I hate trying to read italics on computer screens, so I have placed Latin names in bold text instead. Thus, you will see Chaetoceros danicus, when it really should be Chaetoceros danicus.

What does the cryptic pink text mean? We are developing this site on-line. Pink text is a flag/note to myself to go back and finish/fix something.

Viewing this site - My goal is to get the basic information on line first, and then try to make it look nice. As I continue to learn more about web development, some increasingly advanced features will start to show up. For example, I am going to start displaying descriptions within frames (divided screens), so that you can easily switch between text descriptions and various kinds of illustrations without waiting forever for files to load. I plan to add in some animations, for example, depicting cell division in diatoms. Sooner or later there will be a movie of Bacillaria. Some of these features will require that you be using an up-to-date version of Netscape or Internet Explorer which can display frames, animated gifs, java applets, etc. If your version is an old one, you can download the latest technology from their respective web sites:

Netscape:

Microsoft Internet Explorer:

Many of the wonderful line-drawing illustrations on this site were done by Dana Hrubes. He's much better at this than I ever was. But you'll see some of my drawings, too.
